The spider is one of the most recognized insects found in homes throughout the United States. This is largely due to the phobias most people have about them. Because all spiders are predators, every spider carries venom in the front fangs which help to neutralize their prey. Generally there is little complications resulting from spider bites, however, those with allergic reactions, especially children and the elderly, should be cautious and proactive when dealing with spider populations.

It is important that homeowners are able to identify the three most venomous spiders (Black Widow, Brown Recluse, and Aggressive House Spider) and apply caution when an infestation is suspected.

Black Widow Spider
1/4” - 1/2” in size. Females are easily identified by their shiny black color with red or yellowish hourglass pattern on the abdomen. The males are smaller and lighter in color with light streaks. The black widow spider venom is a neurotoxin which may cause severe reaction. Convulsions and death may result if the victim is allergic or no medical care is given. The anti-venom, however, is available at most medical facilities.

Brown Recluse Spider
1/2” in size. This spider is generally yellowish to dark brown with a distinctive violin shaped brown marking on the top of the cephalothorax (region just behind the eyes). The bite is initially less painful than a bee sting but symptoms can be severe and show up 8 to 12 hours later. The reaction to venom is usually quite severe and immediate medical attention is necessary. The Brown Recluse Spider is usually found indoors and may bite when trapped or crushed.

Aggressive House Spider
1” in size. These spiders are usually brown with darker markings and account for most of the reported bites with symptoms similar to the Brown Recluse Spider. The main identifying characteristic is the funnel web which is produced instead of the cobweb.

When bitten by a spider, it is helpful to take the specimen to the doctor so it can be correctly identified.
