How did we get into Pest Control?

JOHN

I got into the Pest Control industry in Oct. 1991. I had just completed six years of service in the US Marine Corps. Upon retuning home from Desert Storm, I found it impossible to find employment in my field of expertise as a Jet Engine Mechanic. You see, following Desert Storm, the aviation field was not hiring, they were actually downsizing. Having obligations and responsibilities, I had to work. So, I responded to an ad for Orkin Pest Control in Richmond, VA. I worked for Orkin for three years in Richmond as a technician and an inspector. After which time, I was asked to relocate to Waldorf, MD to run their service department. I worked in this role for one year. Having completely turned the service department around, I was ready to come back home to Virginia. As a result, in 1995, I went to work as an inspector for Dodson Pest Control and one year later was offered the position of District Manager for Dodson’s Charlottesville office. Since I graduated from Fork Union Military Academy, I was familiar with the area and its beauty. So I accepted. I worked in this position for five years. My District was the “District of the Year” in the company, which had over 30 offices at the time, two of those five years. Additionally, we were the “Most Professional Office in the Region”, of which there were 9 offices, three of the five years.

I began working in the Pest Control Industry in 1993. My first position was as an inspector for a national pest control company. This was a challenge I enjoyed for several years. Eager for more knowledge and having the desire to learn more about the technical side of the industry, I opted to become a Pest Control Technician. After a well-rounded experience, I knew that Pest Control was going to be a lifelong endeavor. However, I was not happy with the level of service I was forced to provide. So, I stayed in the industry, but changed firms. I then went to work for a family owned Pest Control company where I worked for the next seven years. During those years, I started as an inspector and was soon promoted to Termite Supervisor, Regional Trainer, Quality Assurance and finally, District Management. This experience allowed me to learn AND teach in every facet of the business.

In Dec. of 2001 our Mom passed away suddenly in her home. Everything changed then. Since I lived and worked in Charlottesville and Ty lived and worked in Norfolk we really only saw each other at work functions or at Mom’s house. With her gone, that piece would be missing. We both wanted to get back to FAMILY. So, in 2002, Holistic Pest Solutions was born out of a love for family. We are both driven to provide superior customer service with excellent results. It is our goal to set the standard for Pest Management in Central Virginia. We want to “WOW” our customers with exceptional service in an effort to build a family of loyal clients. Finally, at HPS, we know we can give you better, long-term results with the least impact on the environment! How might we help you?
